Venice, Italy — Europe
Editorial research. Profiled through in-depth editorial research; Browntravels has not yet stayed at this property. How we review
A 16th-century palazzo on the Grand Canal, its Tiepolo ceilings and private gardens sheltering just 24 rooms of monastic-luxe calm.
Aman Venice inhabits the Palazzo Papadopoli, a 1550s Grand Canal palace whose piano nobile retains Tiepolo ceiling frescoes, gilded ballrooms and silk-hung salons that guests treat as their own living rooms. Where Venice's grand hotels multiply keys, Aman restricts itself to 24, so the palace never feels like anything other than a private residence with the world's best staff.
The design conversation—original rococo exuberance answered by Aman's pale, pared-back furnishings—shouldn't work, yet produces one of Europe's most sophisticated interiors. Rooms range from serene chambers to alcova suites beneath restored frescoes; two private gardens, among precious few on the Grand Canal, hold breakfast tables beneath magnolias.
Arrival by the hotel's polished launch, stepping from water directly into the palazzo's own landing, remains quietly thrilling. Dining is intimate Italian, served in the garden or gilded salons, and a small spa occupies the old altana level. San Polo's untouristed lanes begin at the back gate, with the Rialto a short walk. For Venice at its most private and painterly, nothing else compares.
24 rooms and suites in the palazzo, from calm contemporary chambers to grand alcova suites beneath original 16th-century frescoes.
Refined Venetian and Italian cooking served in frescoed salons and the canal-side garden, with an elegant bar in the piano nobile.
An intimate top-floor spa with treatment rooms and views over San Polo's rooftops; private yoga can be arranged in the gardens.
The Browntravels Verdict
The most refined stay in Venice: palace, gallery and private home at once—book a frescoed suite and surrender to it.
