Galle, Sri Lanka — Asia
Editorial research. Profiled through in-depth editorial research; Browntravels has not yet stayed at this property. How we review
Aman's serene occupation of Galle Fort's 17th-century hotel buildings, where colonial-era planters' chairs meet UNESCO ramparts.
Amangalla inhabits the oldest hotel fabric in Sri Lanka: a run of Dutch-colonial buildings inside Galle Fort dating to the 17th century, which traded for over a century as the New Oriental Hotel before Aman's meticulous restoration. The fort itself—a UNESCO World Heritage site of ramparts, lighthouse and grid-plan lanes built by the Dutch East India Company—begins at the veranda's edge, and the hotel functions as its most graceful vantage point.
Interiors keep faith with the building's history: polished teak and jakwood floors, four-poster beds, planters' chairs and ceiling fans, with deep-set windows overlooking Church Street or the gardens. The Great Hall, running the length of the facade, serves as lounge, dining room and social heart, where afternoon tea unfolds as the fort's schoolchildren and tuk-tuks pass outside—a scene essentially unchanged in rhythm for generations.
Behind the historic front, The Baths spa spreads through a garden wing with hydrotherapy suites and Ayurvedic-influenced treatments, alongside a calm pool shaded by frangipani. Galle's boutiques, galleries and rampart walks fill the days, with the southern beaches a short drive beyond the walls. For travellers who want Sri Lanka's coastal history rather than simply its sand, Amangalla is the definitive address.
Around 30 rooms and suites with teak floors, four-posters and planters' chairs; Chambers overlook Church Street, suites gain garden calm.
The Great Hall for Sri Lankan and Western menus, celebrated afternoon tea, and veranda breakfasts as the fort wakes.
The Baths, a garden spa with hydrotherapy circuits and Ayurvedic-influenced therapies, plus a serene outdoor pool.
The Browntravels Verdict
Galle Fort's grande dame reborn—stay for living history, veranda rituals and Aman polish inside the ramparts.
