Bissau's principal international-standard hotel — the Malian Azalaï group's renovation of the capital's historic 24 de Setembro, with gardens, a proper pool and dependable service.
For decades the 24 de Setembro was where visiting delegations stayed in Bissau, and its takeover and rebuild by the West African Azalaï group gave the capital its first dependable international-standard address. Set in gardens a short drive from the airport and the government quarter, it is the default choice for business travellers, NGOs and the small stream of visitors bound for the Bijagós.
Rooms are modern and air-conditioned with reliable power and hot water — the fundamentals that matter here — arranged around gardens and one of the city's best pools. Conference space makes it the capital's meeting point, and the restaurant covers Portuguese-influenced and West African cooking at an even standard.
It is not a destination in itself, but as a first and last night around a Bijagós expedition, or a working base in the capital, it is comfortably Bissau's leading city hotel.
