Lisbon, Portugal — Europe
Editorial research. Profiled through in-depth editorial research; Browntravels has not yet stayed at this property. How we review
Lisbon's original boutique hotel, on the corner of Chiado and Bairro Alto, reimagined by Pritzker laureate Eduardo Souto de Moura with a celebrated Tagus-view rooftop.
Occupying a cluster of eighteenth-century buildings on Praça Luís de Camões, exactly where the elegance of Chiado meets the nightlife of Bairro Alto, this was the hotel that introduced Lisbon to the boutique idea. Its later renovation under Eduardo Souto de Moura, Portugal's Pritzker Prize-winning architect, deepened rather than diluted the character: pombaline bones, contemporary Portuguese craft, and interiors that fold azulejo blues and mid-century pieces into something unmistakably of the city.
The rooftop terrace is the property's calling card, looking down over terracotta rooftops to the Tagus and across to the Cristo Rei statue—one of central Lisbon's finest vantage points, and a bar destination for residents as much as guests. Below it, the dining rooms take Portuguese produce seriously, from petiscos to more composed tasting menus.
Rooms vary with the historic architecture—some snug, the best with river glimpses and small balconies over the praça—all dressed in deep greens, dark timber and Portuguese fabrics. The tram rattles past, fado bars and Time Out Market are minutes on foot, and the trade-off is honest: this is a hotel for being in the thick of Lisbon, with the mild soundtrack that implies.
Around 80 rooms and suites across joined historic buildings, in deep greens and Portuguese timber; the best add balconies over Praça Luís de Camões or river glimpses.
Portuguese fine dining and casual petiscos rooms, a pastry counter, and the rooftop bar-terrace that ranks among Lisbon's best sunset seats.
A compact wellness area with treatment rooms and a small gym—city-break scale rather than destination spa.
The Browntravels Verdict
The definitive central-Lisbon boutique—location, rooftop and Portuguese soul over spa-resort amenities.
