Istanbul, Turkey — Europe
Editorial research. Profiled through in-depth editorial research; Browntravels has not yet stayed at this property. How we review
A restored Ottoman palace on the Bosphorus shore whose waterfront infinity pool and sultan-era suites remain Istanbul's grandest stage.
Istanbul has taller and newer hotels, but only one occupies a genuine Ottoman imperial palace on the water's edge. The Çırağan estate pairs the restored 19th-century palace—home to the city's most storied suites and ballroom—with a purpose-built hotel wing, all wrapped in gardens that run down to a marble quay on the Bosphorus. Ferries, tankers and fishing boats stream past in an endless, hypnotic parade.
The hotel wing's rooms are classically dressed in Ottoman reds and golds; the ones to book face the strait, where balconies put the ship traffic almost within touching distance. In the palace itself, a small collection of suites delivers gilded ceilings and antique furnishings on a scale few hotels in Europe can match. Service is formal, multilingual and accustomed to state-level occasions.
The waterfront infinity pool—seemingly spilling into the Bosphorus—anchors summer days, while breakfast on the quay terrace is one of the city's great rituals. Ottoman fine dining at the palace restaurant and easy access to Beşiktaş and Ortaköy round it out. For sheer sense of place on the water, nothing in Istanbul compares.
310 rooms and suites in the hotel wing plus a handful of palatial suites in the restored palace; Bosphorus-facing balconies are the essential upgrade.
A refined Ottoman fine-dining restaurant in the palace, a Bosphorus-side brasserie famed for its breakfast spread, and summer terraces on the quay.
A marble hammam and spa with Turkish bathing rituals, an indoor pool, and the celebrated outdoor infinity pool at the water's edge.
The Browntravels Verdict
Istanbul's definitive special-occasion address—stay for the palace theatre and the Bosphorus rolling past your balcony.
