Conservatorium Hotel

The Conservatorium stands on Museumplein directly opposite the Stedelijk and a minute from the Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum, occupying a fin-de-siècle building that served first as a savings bank and later as the Sweelinck music conservatory. Milanese architect Piero Lissoni's conversion draped a soaring glass atrium over the courtyard and threaded Italian minimalism through the Gothic-revival fabric, producing one of Europe's most photographed hotel interiors.

Many rooms and suites are duplexes, a legacy of the building's lofty proportions, with sitting areas below and sleeping galleries above; floor-to-ceiling windows frame either the museum quarter or the quiet inner court. The clientele leans international-creative—fashion, art and music worlds treating the brasserie's atrium as a de facto clubhouse, especially during Amsterdam's art and dance-music calendars.

The subterranean Akasha spa ranks among the city's best, with a proper swimming pool, hammam and holistic treatment menu. Taiko, chef Schilo van Coevorden's Asian-inspired restaurant, has become a destination in its own right, and the Tunes Bar pours serious cocktails beneath the old vaults. Between the Concertgebouw across the square and PC Hooftstraat's boutiques around the corner, the location is cultural Amsterdam distilled.
