Editorial research. Profiled through in-depth editorial research; Browntravels has not yet stayed at this property. How we review
Barcelona's original grand hotel, opened in 1919 as the Ritz, still holding court on Gran Vía with chandeliers, a rooftop garden and old-world manners.
Before Barcelona's design-hotel boom there was the Ritz, opened on Gran Vía de les Corts Catalanes in 1919 and renamed El Palace decades later. The bones are pure belle-époque grand hotel: a colonnaded façade, a marble lobby beneath chandeliers, and a sweeping staircase that has welcomed a century of artists, aristocrats and opera stars passing through the city. In a town that often chases the new, its unhurried formality has become a distinction in itself.
Rooms are classical in dress—moulded ceilings, silk headboards, some with the famous step-up Roman-style baths in marble bathrooms—yet run on modern systems, and the quietest overlook the interior rather than the busy Gran Vía. Service keeps a level of old-school ceremony, from white-glove breakfast service to a concierge desk with deep city roots.
The rooftop garden is the summer secret: a lawn-and-terrace retreat with a plunge pool, cocktails and views across the Eixample's rooftops towards the Sagrada Família. With Passeig de Gràcia's Gaudí façades and the old town both walkable, El Palace suits travellers who want Barcelona's history rather than its fashion—an increasingly rare offer at this level.
Around 120 rooms and suites in classical dress with moulded ceilings and marble bathrooms; several retain the hotel's noted step-up Roman baths.
Refined Catalan and Mediterranean dining, a chandeliered bar with a long cocktail tradition, and summer service in the rooftop garden.
An intimate spa with a short menu of treatments and the rooftop plunge pool for warm-weather months.
The Browntravels Verdict
The keeper of Barcelona's grand-hotel flame—choose it for ceremony, history and a rooftop garden few visitors know.
