Funafuti, Tuvalu — Oceania
Editorial research. Profiled through in-depth editorial research; Browntravels has not yet stayed at this property. How we review
The lodge beside Funafuti's airport terminal, with a breezy balcony over the famous runway and honest island hospitality.
Filamona Lodge holds one of aviation's more charming addresses: directly beside the terminal building of Funafuti International Airport, its upstairs balcony overlooking the runway that doubles, between the week's few flights, as Tuvalu's playing field, evening promenade and community living room. Guests watch volleyball games and motorbikes drift across the tarmac at dusk, then see the same strip transform with sirens and ceremony when the plane from Fiji appears.
Rooms are simple with air-conditioning, cold-water showers and very good wifi, and the lodge's restaurant is a dependable feeder—meals appear even on Sundays, when the rest of Funafuti's eateries close for church, a detail experienced Tuvalu hands appreciate. The family management is kindly and flexible in the island way.
Being steps from check-in makes Filamona the logical first and last night of any Tuvalu visit, and its central position works for the whole stay: government offices, the lagoon shore and the Funafuti Conservation Area boat operators are all within easy reach. Comforts are frugal, but the balcony, the runway theatre and the warmth of the welcome give this modest lodge a character all its own.
Simple air-conditioned rooms with cold-water showers; the balcony rooms overlooking the runway are the ones to request.
An on-site restaurant serving island plates daily—including Sundays, when Funafuti's other kitchens rest.
None; runway strolls and lagoon dips a few minutes away.
The Browntravels Verdict
Funafuti's runway-side original—frugal, friendly and full of Tuvaluan character.
