Colombo, Sri Lanka — Asia
Editorial research. Profiled through in-depth editorial research; Browntravels has not yet stayed at this property. How we review
One of Asia's oldest hotels, an oceanfront Victorian grande dame on Galle Face Green since 1864, famous for chequered verandas and Indian Ocean sunsets.
The Galle Face Hotel has fronted the Indian Ocean since 1864, making it one of the oldest continuously operating hotels east of Suez. Its cream Victorian facade closes the southern end of Galle Face Green, the seafront lawn where Colombo promenades at dusk, and its guest book reads like a century of history—from royalty and prime ministers to Yuri Gagarin, whose visits the hotel's small museum of memorabilia records alongside vintage cars and colonial-era artefacts.
Restoration has burnished rather than modernised the character: the chequerboard-tiled veranda, whirring fans, wooden staircases and sea-facing courtyard remain gloriously intact, while the renovated Classic and Heritage wings bring bathrooms and comforts up to contemporary standards. The nightly flag-lowering ceremony at sunset, bugler included, is a piece of theatre few hotels anywhere still stage.
Dining centres on the courtyard and veranda—seafood, Sri Lankan curries and colonial-era cocktails served to the sound of breaking waves—alongside more formal rooms inland. A seafront pool sits almost on the rocks, and the spa handles Ayurvedic traditions in keeping with the island. Slick it is not, and neither should it be; as a base for Colombo and a first or last night on a Sri Lanka circuit, it is irreplaceable.
Around 150 rooms and suites across the Classic and Heritage wings, classically furnished; the ones to book face the Indian Ocean.
Courtyard and veranda dining with seafood and Sri Lankan curries, a formal dining room, and sunset cocktails on the chequerboard terrace.
A seafront swimming pool at the ocean's edge, Ayurvedic-influenced spa treatments and a modest fitness room.
The Browntravels Verdict
Colombo's living monument—faded-grandeur romance, ocean sunsets and 160 years of stories for a fraction of grand-hotel prices elsewhere.
