Grand Hôtel Stockholm

The Grand Hôtel has occupied Stockholm's finest waterfront since 1874, its long stone facade looking across the harbour to the Royal Palace and the old town of Gamla Stan. Its history is braided into Sweden's: Nobel laureates have traditionally stayed here since the earliest years of the prize, and the Hall of Mirrors—modelled on Versailles—hosted the first Nobel banquets. The quayside out front, with ferries threading toward the archipelago, remains one of Europe's great hotel outlooks.

Rooms range from Gustavian-inflected classicism to more contemporary Scandinavian design, with water-facing rooms overlooking palace, parliament and passing boats worth every krona of their premium. The clientele mixes state visits, business Stockholm and travellers bound for the archipelago, and the hotel handles all three with unfussy Nordic assurance.

Food is a genuine pillar: the hotel's association with Mathias Dahlgren has produced some of Sweden's most influential restaurants, while the Verandan serves the classic smörgåsbord with harbour views and the Cadier Bar—named for the founder—pours cocktails against the palace panorama. The Nordic-inspired spa adds saunas and a pool. As Sweden's definitive grand hotel, it has never faced a serious challenger.
