Yerevan, Armenia — Asia
Editorial research. Profiled through in-depth editorial research; Browntravels has not yet stayed at this property. How we review
A 1928 grande dame on Abovyan Street reborn as a boutique classic, with a courtyard pool rare in central Yerevan.
The Grand Hotel Yerevan is the city's original hotel, built in 1928 on Abovyan Street as part of Alexander Tamanyan's plan for the new Armenian capital, and its guest book runs through the cultural elite of the Soviet century. Restored and run today as a Small Luxury Hotels member, it trades on that heritage gracefully: a handsome tuff-stone facade, a lobby of parquet and period photographs, and a scale—under a hundred rooms—that keeps the mood personal.
Rooms are classical and comfortable, with high ceilings in the old wing and a warm, slightly old-world palette; suites overlooking Abovyan Street catch the evening promenade below. The surprise is at the back: a courtyard with an outdoor pool and loungers, an genuine rarity in central Yerevan and a blessing in the fierce Caucasus summer.
The position is ideal for wandering—Republic Square is three minutes downhill, the Opera and Cascade ten minutes up—and the hotel's terrace café is a civilised place to watch the street. Service is kindly rather than slick, and the whole property asks to be enjoyed at Yerevan's unhurried pace. For travellers who prefer history and charm to marble gloss, this is the city's most characterful address.
Around 90 classical rooms and suites with high ceilings and warm traditional decor; the best face Abovyan Street's evening promenade.
A courtyard restaurant and street-front terrace café serving Armenian and European dishes, with notable local wines.
A courtyard outdoor pool, small sauna and treatment rooms; wellness here is sunlit and simple.
The Browntravels Verdict
The heritage choice in Yerevan—stay for the 1928 bones, the courtyard pool and the best strolling street in town.
