Suva, Fiji — Oceania
Editorial research. Profiled through in-depth editorial research; Browntravels has not yet stayed at this property. How we review
Fiji's 'GPH', a 1914 harbourfront grande dame built for the ocean-liner era and restored to its white-columned glory in Suva.
The Grand Pacific Hotel opened in 1914, built by the Union Steam Ship Company so that trans-Pacific liner passengers could step ashore in Suva to accommodation matching their staterooms; its white neoclassical block on Victoria Parade was designed to feel like a ship at anchor, promenade deck and all. Royalty and dignitaries passed through for decades before the building fell into long dereliction, and its meticulous 2014 restoration — a century after opening — returned a South Pacific icon to service.
The heritage building holds the grandest suites, high-ceilinged and balconied above the harbour, while a modern wing behind supplies contemporary rooms around the pool terrace. Public spaces are the showpiece: a double-height lobby under whirring fans, verandahs made for a cold Fiji Bitter at dusk, and lawns running down towards the water with Joske's Thumb and the mountains across the harbour.
Suva is Fiji's working capital rather than a resort town, and the GPH sits opposite Albert Park — where Kingsford Smith landed the Southern Cross in 1928 — and near the Fiji Museum's superb Pacific collections. Guests seeking beaches should pair it with island resorts; the GPH's offer is history, harbour light and the ceremonial heart of the South Pacific, delivered with genuine Fijian warmth.
Around 110 rooms and suites; heritage-wing suites with harbour balconies carry the occasion, with modern poolside rooms behind.
An all-day restaurant spanning Fijian, Indian and international cooking, verandah cocktails and high tea in the colonnaded lobby.
A harbour-facing pool terrace, gym and small spa; the seawall promenade makes a fine morning walk.
The Browntravels Verdict
The South Pacific's great surviving liner-era hotel — the reason to give Suva a night or two before the islands.
