Riga, Latvia — Europe
Editorial research. Profiled through in-depth editorial research; Browntravels has not yet stayed at this property. How we review
Riga's discreet old-town classic in a former central-bank building beside the Dome Cathedral, long the city's most personal luxury address.
The Grand Palace occupies a stately 1877 building that once served the Latvian central bank, tucked onto quiet Pils street between the Dome Cathedral and Riga Castle. For two decades it has been the old town's understated luxury benchmark: a small, privately minded hotel where the style is classical—chandeliers, moulded ceilings, marble bathrooms—and the service personal in a way larger flags cannot imitate. Membership of small-luxury circuits has kept its standards, and its clientele, consistent.
Rooms and suites are dressed in soft classical tones with period detailing and good beds; the best look over the old town's rooftops and church spires. The scale—just over fifty keys—means the bar's fireside armchairs and the intimate restaurant rarely feel busy.
The location does the rest. The cathedral square, the Three Brothers houses and the Daugava embankment are all within three minutes on foot, and the art-nouveau district's famous facades are a pleasant fifteen-minute walk. There is a small fitness-and-sauna suite rather than a full spa, but for travellers who prize location, discretion and old-world manners, the Grand Palace remains Riga's first name.
56 rooms and suites in classical style with moulded ceilings and marble bathrooms; upper rooms catch old-town spires.
An intimate restaurant of modern European cooking with Latvian touches, plus a clubby bar with an open fire.
A compact fitness room and sauna; Riga's old town, not a spa circuit, is the main event.
The Browntravels Verdict
Riga's most personal luxury address—old-world manners and a perfect old-town position in a former bank.
