Hotel Museo Casa Santo Domingo

Casa Santo Domingo is Antigua distilled into a single property. Built into the ruins of the Santo Domingo monastery, one of colonial America's largest religious complexes before the earthquakes of the eighteenth century, the hotel threads its rooms, courtyards and restaurants between original stone walls, archaeological crypts and working museums of colonial and pre-Columbian art. Candles burn in niches along the corridors each evening, macaws call from the gardens, and the line between hotel and living monument is deliberately blurred.

Rooms are dressed in colonial style—carved wood, wrought iron, woven textiles and fireplaces in many—arranged around fountained courtyards heavy with bougainvillea. The property's scale surprises given the intimacy of its lanes: there are multiple pools, a spa, an outdoor sculpture terrace on the hill above town reached by the hotel's own path, and one of Antigua's most established restaurants, where lava-stone grills and Guatemalan coffee rituals anchor long dinners under the ruins.

The location, a few cobbled blocks from the Plaza Mayor and the arch of Santa Catalina, puts the whole town within a stroll, with the Pacaya and Acatenango volcanoes supplying excursions. It is not the quietest address—weddings and events are part of its life—but nowhere else in the region delivers history at this depth with this much comfort.
