Hotel d'Angleterre

The d'Angleterre has stood on Kongens Nytorv since 1755, making it one of the world's oldest luxury hotels in continuous operation, its white neoclassical facade facing the Royal Danish Theatre across the square with Nyhavn's coloured townhouses a minute's walk away. Danish royal celebrations, state visits and Copenhagen society have flowed through its ballroom for more than two and a half centuries, and each winter the hotel's animated Christmas facade becomes a city attraction in its own right.

A comprehensive renovation brought serene Scandinavian classicism to the rooms—pale palettes, marble bathrooms, silk and blond wood—without losing the sense of occasion in the public spaces. Square-facing rooms watch the theatre and the life of Kongens Nytorv; the suites are among Scandinavia's most polished. Service is precise in the Danish manner, warm without excess ceremony.

Marchal, the ground-floor restaurant named for the hotel's founding couple, holds a Michelin star for its Franco-Danish cooking, while Balthazar pours one of northern Europe's deepest champagne lists in a jewel-box bar.
