Hotel de Rome

Hotel de Rome occupies the 1889 headquarters of the Dresdner Bank on Bebelplatz, the historic square framed by the State Opera and St. Hedwig's Cathedral just off Unter den Linden. The conversion by Rocco Forte kept the building's banking-hall grandeur—coffered ceilings, marble columns, monumental staircases—while Olga Polizzi's interiors layer in mid-century lines and Berlin-appropriate wit rather than reproduction pomp.

The building's past supplies the hotel's best stories. The former jewel vault, its original steel door intact, now houses the swimming pool and spa, giving a subterranean swim a genuine sense of theatre. Upstairs, the seasonal rooftop terrace looks across the Forum Fridericianum's domes and down Unter den Linden—one of Mitte's finest evening perches, with Museum Island and the Brandenburg Gate both within an easy walk.

Rooms are generously scaled, particularly the historic-wing suites with their soaring windows onto the square. The Italian restaurant and lobby bar keep the Forte family's Mediterranean warmth at the heart of the house.
