Editorial research. Profiled through in-depth editorial research; Browntravels has not yet stayed at this property. How we review
A Dorchester Collection grande dame above the Spanish Steps whose rooftop dining room frames one of the finest skyline views in Rome.
Hotel Eden has watched over Rome since 1889 from its perch between Villa Borghese and the Spanish Steps, and a meticulous renovation completed in 2017 returned the house to the front rank of the city's hotels. The position is the great asset: high enough on the slope of the Pincian Hill to see domes and terracotta rooftops unroll towards St Peter's, yet a short stroll from Via Condotti and the galleries of Villa Borghese. Under Dorchester Collection stewardship the tone is polished, discreet and unmistakably Roman.
Rooms are dressed in soft creams, marble and quietly classical detailing, with the best categories facing the panorama rather than the courtyard. The scale is intimate by grand-hotel standards, which keeps service personal; regulars are greeted by name and the concierge desk is among the most capable in the city. There is a compact but serious spa below stairs, a rarity in central Rome.
The top floor is the reason many guests book. La Terrazza serves refined Mediterranean cooking against a wall of glass overlooking the city, while the adjacent Il Giardino restaurant and bar handles long aperitivo evenings as the light turns golden over the rooftops. Few Roman addresses combine heritage, position and gastronomy this convincingly.
Around 98 rooms and suites in cream, gold and marble; upper-floor suites open onto the famous city panorama.
La Terrazza for refined Mediterranean fine dining, Il Giardino restaurant and bar for all-day Roman classics and sunset aperitivi.
An intimate lower-level spa with treatment rooms, sauna and a well-equipped gym; no pool.
The Browntravels Verdict
The most complete of Rome's classic hotels for travellers who want heritage, hilltop views and serious food under one roof.
