Hotel Europe

The original Hotel Europe was Minsk's belle-époque pride—the first building in the city with a lift—before its destruction in the Second World War, and the 2007 reconstruction returned an Art Nouveau silhouette to the same corner of the Upper Town, opposite the ratusha and steps from the cathedral. It remains the most characterful of Minsk's five-stars: intimate at around 67 rooms, with a skylit atrium, curving staircase, and interiors that favour polished classicism over corporate anonymity.

Rooms are comfortable and traditional, the best on upper floors overlooking Svabody Square's restored churches and gables. The restaurant handles Belarusian and European dishes capably, and a small wellness area with sauna and plunge pool serves the after-hours hours. What the Europe sells above all is position: the Upper Town's cafés, the riverside at Trinity Suburb and the monumental Stalinist sweep of Independence Avenue are all on foot. Belarus sees few Western leisure travellers under current political conditions and sanctions, and visitors should check visa rules and advisories carefully—but those who do come find Minsk clean, safe on the street and curious about its guests.
