Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina — Europe
Editorial research. Profiled through in-depth editorial research; Browntravels has not yet stayed at this property. How we review
Sarajevo's grande dame since 1882, standing exactly where the Ottoman bazaar meets the Austro-Hungarian boulevard.
Hotel Europe is Sarajevo's history in hotel form. Founded in 1882 during the Austro-Hungarian ascendancy, it was built precisely on the seam that defines the city—one façade toward Baščaršija's Ottoman lanes of coppersmiths and ćevapi smoke, the other toward the Habsburg boulevards—and it hosted the empire's officials, then Yugoslavia's, surviving war damage to be rebuilt and reopened as the city's flagship. The famous Viennese café at its base, all chandeliers and cream cakes, remains a Sarajevo institution in its own right.
Interiors today are classical-contemporary—marble, wrought iron and warm wood—with rooms that prioritise comfort and quiet over fashion; the best look toward the old town's minarets and the surrounding hills. An indoor pool, saunas and a fitness area give it the fullest wellness offer in the city centre, and the location cannot be improved: the Latin Bridge where the twentieth century turned, the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque, the bazaar and the Vijećnica city hall are all within five minutes on foot. Service is courteous and old-school. For first-time visitors wanting Sarajevo's layered story at the doorstep, no address says it better.
Around 160 rooms and suites in classical-contemporary style; upper rooms look across red roofs and minarets to the hills.
A formal restaurant of Bosnian and European dishes and the landmark Viennese café at street level.
An indoor pool, saunas, steam bath and gym—the best-equipped wellness floor in central Sarajevo.
The Browntravels Verdict
Sarajevo's definitive address—stay where the city's two empires meet and take coffee like it is 1900.
