Vaduz, Liechtenstein — Europe
Editorial research. Profiled through in-depth editorial research; Browntravels has not yet stayed at this property. How we review
A wine-country inn dating to 1380 on the edge of Vaduz, with antique-furnished rooms overlooking the Prince's own vineyards.
The Gasthof Löwen claims a founding date of 1380, which makes it one of the Alpine region's oldest continuously running inns, and its setting still tells the old story: the flower-boxed, shuttered house stands between Vaduz centre and the vine rows of the Herawingert, the Prince of Liechtenstein's own vineyard, with the castle above and the Swiss mountains across the Rhine. Goethe is among the guests history records; today the inn trades comfortably on six centuries of hospitality.
The handful of rooms upstairs are individually furnished with antiques, timber and rich fabrics, several opening to balconies over the vineyard—one of the more quietly beautiful outlooks in the principality. Downstairs, low ceilings, old wood and a tiled stove keep the historic register intact.
Food and wine are central: the kitchen serves refined Liechtenstein and Austrian-Swiss borderland cooking—schnitzel and game alongside lighter seasonal plates—and the cellar naturally features the princely Hofkellerei wines grown next door, best taken on the vine-facing garden terrace. The town's museums are ten minutes' walk. For heritage, wine and castle views at sensible rates, the Löwen is the characterful alternative to the hillside flagship.
8 antique-furnished rooms with timber, rich fabrics and, in the best, balconies over the princely vineyard.
Refined borderland cooking—game, schnitzel, seasonal plates—with the Prince's Hofkellerei wines and a vine-side terrace.
None; vineyard strolls and the walk up to Vaduz Castle stand in.
The Browntravels Verdict
Six centuries of hospitality beside the Prince's vines—Liechtenstein's most atmospheric bed and table.
