Hotel Kämp

Hotel Kämp has been Finland's most important hotel since 1887, when restaurateur Carl Kämp opened his neo-Renaissance palace on the Pohjoisesplanadi, the elegant boulevard at the heart of Helsinki. The national mythology runs deep: composer Jean Sibelius, painter Akseli Gallen-Kallela and Marshal Mannerheim were habitués, and much of the young republic's political and artistic life was argued over dinners here. The building was reconstructed in the 1960s behind its historic facade, and the hotel's later revival restored its position at the top of Finnish hospitality.

Interiors deliver grand-hotel classicism—chandeliers, marble, deep armchairs—warmed by Finnish touches, and rooms range from classical doubles to the landmark Mannerheim Suite. Esplanadi-facing rooms overlook the park promenade where the whole city seems to stroll on summer evenings.

The Kämp Bar remains a Helsinki institution for cocktails, the brasserie handles Franco-Finnish classics, and the top-floor Kämp Spa adds saunas and treatments in the city's own tradition. Design District boutiques, the harbour market square and Senate Square are all within a few minutes' walk. For a first stay in Helsinki with the nation's history in the walls, there is no substitute.
