Hotel Metropol Moscow

The Metropol is less a hotel than a chapter of Russian history rendered in majolica and stained glass. Built between 1899 and 1905 to designs shaped by William Walcot and adorned with Mikhail Vrubel's famous 'Princess of Dreams' mosaic, it stands directly across from the Bolshoi Theatre with Red Square and the Kremlin a five-minute walk away. Rachmaninoff, Chaliapin and generations of statesmen passed through its doors; after the revolution it briefly housed the Soviet government itself. Today it operates independently, and the fabric of the building—brass balustrades, period furniture, corridors hung with archival photographs—remains one of Europe's great Art Nouveau interiors.

Rooms range from classical doubles to antique-filled suites, many retaining original details, and while the housekeeping standard is high, the pleasure here is atmosphere rather than cutting-edge design. The morning ritual is the point: breakfast under the vast stained-glass dome of the Metropol Hall, harp music included, is among the most beautiful hotel experiences anywhere. A spa with a small pool, a chocolate atelier and restaurants of classical Russian and European cooking complete the picture. Western visitors should note that sanctions-era practicalities—card payments, direct flights and booking channels—require planning, but the Metropol itself continues to run with pride.
