Hotel St. George

The St. George occupies a handsome 1840s block facing the greenery of Old Church Park, a building that over its lifetimes housed a literary society and printing works—an ancestry the hotel honours with hundreds of artworks, including a suspended Ai Weiwei dragon in the Winter Garden lounge. Opened in 2018 as sibling to the grander Kämp, it stakes out different territory: contemporary, art-driven and wellness-minded, a distinctly Helsinki interpretation of the modern luxury hotel.

Rooms are serene compositions of pale oak, soft greys and Finnish design pieces, many looking into the park's lindens; the run of suites culminates in light-flooded corner quarters. Downstairs, the St. George Care wellness area brings a pool, saunas of course, and treatments with a holistic slant—backed by an emphasis on air quality and rest that runs through the house.

The Winter Garden serves as all-day heart for pastries, lunch and cocktails; Restaurant Andrea adds Mediterranean-Levantine cooking, and the in-house bakery is a neighbourhood fixture. The Design District begins at the corner, and Esplanadi and the harbour are ten minutes on foot. For travellers who find the Kämp too gilded, the St. George is Helsinki's calm, contemporary answer.
