Bucharest, Romania — Europe
Editorial research. Profiled through in-depth editorial research; Browntravels has not yet stayed at this property. How we review
The legendary 1914 palace of spies and diplomats on Revolution Square, restored under InterContinental beside the Romanian Athenaeum.
No hotel in the Balkans carries a mythology like the Athénée Palace. Opened in 1914 on what is now Revolution Square, it spent the interwar years and the Cold War as southeastern Europe's most notorious nest of spies, diplomats and journalists—a reputation chronicled in countless memoirs—while its neoclassical bulk watched history unfold outside: royal processions, the 1989 revolution, and everything between. After decades under the Hilton flag, a comprehensive restoration brought it into the InterContinental portfolio in 2023, refreshing rooms and public spaces while preserving the marble columns and English Bar where the intrigue once ran thickest.
The position remains royal: directly beside the domed Romanian Athenaeum concert hall, facing the former Royal Palace and the National Art Museum, with Calea Victoriei's boutiques and cafés running south towards the old town. Rooms are now crisp and contemporary in soft golds; the club floors and Athenaeum-view balconies are worth seeking. Dining spans a refined Romanian-European restaurant and the storied bar, and a spa with an indoor pool restores sightseeing legs. For history, address and polish combined, it is Bucharest's definitive stay.
Around 280 rooms and suites in soft golds and greys post-restoration; Athenaeum-facing rooms and club floors are the ones to book.
Refined Romanian and European dining, generous breakfasts under the colonnades and the legendary English Bar of Cold War fame.
A spa with indoor pool, sauna and treatment rooms on the lower levels.
The Browntravels Verdict
Bucharest's grande dame reborn—stay for Revolution Square, the Athenaeum and the ghosts of the English Bar.
