Sofia, Bulgaria — Europe
Editorial research. Profiled through in-depth editorial research; Browntravels has not yet stayed at this property. How we review
Sofia's sharpest five-star, facing Alexander Nevsky Cathedral's golden domes across the yellow-brick heart of the capital.
The InterContinental holds Sofia's single best address: the corner where the yellow-brick boulevards of the government quarter open towards Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, whose gilded domes fill the windows of the hotel's premium rooms. A top-to-bottom renovation ahead of its 2018 rebranding left it the most contemporary five-star in Bulgaria—cool marble, walnut and bronze below, crisp rooms above—and it has settled in as the default for diplomats, financiers and travellers who want the capital at its most convenient.
Rooms are quiet and rational, with the cathedral-view categories worth every lev of premium; club-lounge access on the upper floors adds one of the city's better vantage points. Floret, the ground-floor restaurant, plates seasonal European cooking with Bulgarian touches, and the gym and small spa cover the essentials. Everything that matters in Sofia is walkable: the National Assembly and archaeological layers of Serdika, the antiquarian booksellers around the university, Vitosha Boulevard's cafés with the mountain rising behind. As a base for Bulgaria's underrated capital—and for day trips to Rila Monastery—the InterContinental is the polished, predictable choice.
Around 194 rooms and suites in cool contemporary tones; cathedral-view rooms frame the golden domes of Alexander Nevsky.
Floret's seasonal European cooking with Bulgarian accents, plus a marble lobby bar favoured by the diplomatic circuit.
A modern gym, sauna and treatment rooms; compact but well kept, without a pool.
The Browntravels Verdict
Sofia's polished default—cathedral views, walkability and the sharpest rooms in the capital.
