Editorial research. Profiled through in-depth editorial research; Browntravels has not yet stayed at this property. How we review
Glasgow's flagship luxury address: a Georgian former automobile club on a garden square with the city's best-known spa.
Blythswood Square is the calm heart of Glasgow's commercial grid, a leafy Georgian set-piece a few blocks uphill from the shops of Buchanan Street, and the Kimpton occupies its finest terrace—the former headquarters of the Royal Scottish Automobile Club. The building's motoring pedigree survives in handsome touches, from the marble staircase to the salon where rally drivers once gathered, now given a plush contemporary Scottish redress in Harris tweed and marble.
Bedrooms across the original terrace and a newer wing are dressed in muted greys and blues with punches of colour, ranging from snug classics to the vast Penthouse overlooking the square's private gardens. The ground-floor Bo & Birdy handles brasserie dining and cocktails with a convivial West of Scotland energy, and the square's position keeps both the business district and the city's galleries within easy walking distance.
The basement spa is the hotel's trump card and arguably Scotland's best-known urban wellness floor: a darkly lit thermal circuit of pool, hydrotherapy, sauna and steam with a long treatment menu. It gives the hotel a resort dimension rare in British city hotels at this price. For visitors wanting Glasgow's culture, retail and nightlife with genuine pampering attached, this remains the city's default luxury choice.
Around 110 rooms and suites in muted contemporary Scottish style; the best occupy the Georgian terrace facing the square's gardens.
Bo & Birdy serves brasserie plates, seafood and cocktails in the grand former club rooms, with afternoon tea in the salon.
A renowned subterranean spa with thermal pool, hydrotherapy, sauna and steam, plus an extensive treatment menu.
The Browntravels Verdict
Glasgow's benchmark luxury hotel—stay for the square, the heritage and that spa.
