Avignon, France — Europe
Editorial research. Profiled through in-depth editorial research; Browntravels has not yet stayed at this property. How we review
An antique-filled former cardinal's residence at the foot of the Palais des Papes, run with the intimacy of a grand private home.
La Mirande sits on a cobbled square directly beneath the Palais des Papes, on foundations that housed a cardinal's livery in the fourteenth century; the present mansion, with its ochre façade, took shape in the seventeenth. Restored by the Stein family with obsessive care—hand-blocked wallpapers, eighteenth-century faience, period furniture bought at auction—it feels less like a hotel than a scholarly reconstruction of Provençal aristocratic life that guests happen to sleep in.
With only around 27 rooms, the atmosphere is genuinely intimate. Chambers vary from cosy attic hideaways to grand salons with painted beams and views to the papal palace walls; the inner courtyard, glazed over as a winter garden, is one of Avignon's loveliest rooms for tea. The old kitchen below hosts a well-regarded cooking school around its original hearth.
The restaurant pursues refined seasonal cooking that has earned Michelin recognition, and a weekly table d'hôte dinner in the historic kitchen remains a beloved ritual. Avignon's theatres, galleries and river walks all lie within minutes on foot. For travellers who value patina and personality over palace-scale facilities, La Mirande is among the most rewarding stays in the south of France.
Around 27 individually decorated rooms and suites with hand-blocked wallpapers and antiques; the finest look onto the Palais des Papes.
A refined seasonal restaurant, a glazed winter-garden salon for tea, and convivial table d'hôte dinners around the original kitchen hearth.
No formal spa; in-room treatments can be arranged, and the hotel's courtyards and salons supply the calm instead.
The Browntravels Verdict
A living piece of eighteenth-century Provence—book it for atmosphere and cooking rather than resort facilities.
