Mashpi Lodge

Mashpi Lodge is one of South America's great architectural gambles made good: a minimalist cocoon of glass and steel set inside a private 2,500-hectare reserve of Chocó cloud forest on the western slope of the Andes, where mist drifts through some of the most biodiverse forest on the planet. Conceived by a former Quito mayor as conservation-through-hospitality, the lodge operates like a five-star research station, with staff biologists, a science lab and a species list—including dozens of hummingbirds and frogs found almost nowhere else—that grows year by year.

Floor-to-ceiling glazing keeps the forest present everywhere, from the double-height dining room to rooms where you wake inside the canopy with tanagers at the window. Interiors are warm-minimalist—timber, wool, leather—deliberately quiet against the green spectacle outside. Expeditions run daily with guides and naturalists: waterfall trails, night walks, the hummingbird and life-centre stations, and the lodge's signature Dragonfly cable car and open gondola, which carry guests slowly through and above the canopy itself.

Meals are contemporary Ecuadorian with produce from the surrounding valleys, and a small spa and hot tub ease trail-sore legs. The lodge's conservation employment of former loggers gives the project moral weight. Remote, cosseting and quietly profound, Mashpi is Ecuador's essential mainland stay.
