Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel

The 'Nellie' has been Cape Town's society hotel since 1899, when it opened to serve Union-Castle liner passengers, and its pink-washed walls—painted to celebrate the end of the First World War—remain among the city's most recognisable sights. The approach along a palm-lined avenue through white columned gates sets the tone: this is a hotel of gardens, ceremony and unhurried Cape charm, with Table Mountain rising directly behind.

Nine acres of grounds absorb the city's noise, sheltering rose gardens, two heated pools and centuries-old trees. Rooms spread between the main house and garden cottages, decorated in a light, floral-English register that suits the building; garden-wing rooms with mountain views are the sweet spot. Families are genuinely welcomed—rare at this level—while the bar draws a stylish local crowd.
