North Island, Seychelles — Indian Ocean
Editorial research. Profiled through in-depth editorial research; Browntravels has not yet stayed at this property. How we review
A rewilded private granite island of just eleven villas, where barefoot 'castaway luxury' meets one of conservation's great success stories.
North Island pioneered the idea that a private island resort could fund an ecological restoration, and three decades of work have returned this granite outcrop to something like its primeval state: native forests replanted, invasive species removed, and both Aldabra tortoises and nesting sea turtles thriving on beaches consistently ranked among the world's most beautiful.
Eleven villas—each over 400 square metres of local timber, glass and thatch, hand-built by island craftsmen—hide along the main beach, with private pools, outdoor baths and dedicated buggies. The 'barefoot luxury' template so widely imitated was substantially written here: no menus, no schedules, and a private chef and guest-experience team shaping each day from scratch.
Diving and snorkelling in the surrounding marine reserve are exceptional, and guests join conservationists for turtle patrols or tortoise feeding when inclined. Dinner may be a sandbank barbecue, a wine-cellar tasting or a table in the trees. It is among the most expensive stays on earth, and among the very few that feel genuinely beyond replication.
11 handcrafted villas of over 400 square metres in timber, thatch and glass, each with pool, outdoor bath, butler and private buggy.
Fully bespoke dining with no fixed menus—private chefs cook to preference anywhere on the island, from sandbanks to the treetop deck.
A granite-and-forest spa above the beach, island yoga, and wellness woven into a rhythm of swimming, diving and barefoot walking.
The Browntravels Verdict
The private-island ideal realised: conservation with soul, villas of rare craft and freedom few resorts anywhere can match.
