Lisbon, Portugal — Europe
Editorial research. Profiled through in-depth editorial research; Browntravels has not yet stayed at this property. How we review
A nineteenth-century count's palace in Lisbon's embassy quarter, with terraced gardens, a palm-fringed pool and Tagus views from the Lapa hilltop.
Built in 1870 as the residence of the Count of Valenças, Lapa Palace crowns one of Lisbon's Seven Hills in the diplomatic quarter of Lapa, where cobbled lanes of embassies and mansions descend towards the river. The palace's original salons survive in full ornamental dress—stucco, frescoes and a fabled Arab Room—while later wings add contemporary comfort around the terraced gardens that are the hotel's true luxury.
Those gardens cascade down the hillside with palms, ponds and a heated outdoor pool, creating a resort-like seclusion ten minutes from the Baixa. Rooms mix classical and Art Deco-inflected styles, the best with balconies over the greenery to the Tagus and the 25 de Abril bridge; suites in the original palace carry genuine period grandeur.
The pace is old-fashioned in the best sense: afternoon tea in the bar, a quiet indoor pool and spa, and staff tenure measured in decades. The location demands taxis or trams for sightseeing, and nightlife is elsewhere—but for travellers who want Lisbon's aristocratic register, gardens and river light rather than boutique buzz, the palace remains the city's most romantic classical address.
Around 100 rooms and suites across the palace and garden wings, from Art Deco-accented rooms to period palace suites with river-view balconies.
Mediterranean and Portuguese menus served in garden-facing rooms and terraces, with a classic bar for afternoon tea and cocktails.
An indoor pool, sauna and treatment rooms alongside the garden pool—modest in size but restful in tone.
The Browntravels Verdict
Lisbon's garden palace—choose it for romance and river views, accepting a taxi ride to the sights.
