Palacio Duhau – Park Hyatt Buenos Aires

The Palacio Duhau solves an elegant problem elegantly: how to turn a private aristocratic palace into a world-class hotel without embalming it. The answer, on Recoleta's Avenida Alvear, was to pair the Duhau family's 1930s neoclassical mansion with a discreet contemporary tower and knit the two together through descending terraced gardens—gravel paths, clipped hedges, a fountain—that form one of the loveliest outdoor spaces in Buenos Aires. Guests choose their era: palace rooms with boiserie and period proportions, or tower rooms in polished contemporary calm.

The gardens set the tone for a hotel that porteños themselves frequent. The terrace fills at dusk for cocktails, the Oak Bar pours Argentine malbecs behind eighteenth-century panelling relocated from a Normandy château, and the Duhau restaurant makes a proper occasion of Argentine beef. The celebrated Vinoteca, part wine bar and part working cheese cellar, matures dozens of Argentine cheeses on-site and offers guided tastings that have become a Recoleta institution.

Below ground, a serene spa with an indoor pool and hammam-style facilities completes the picture, while an underground art gallery corridor—lined with rotating exhibitions—links palace and tower. The Alvear's gilded ceremony is a block away; the Duhau offers something subtler, a conversation between old Buenos Aires and new conducted across a garden. For many returning visitors it has quietly become the city's most complete hotel.
