Pestana Palace Lisboa

The Valle Flor palace was raised at the turn of the twentieth century for a Portuguese marquis enriched by São Tomé cocoa, and its exuberant interiors — frescoed ceilings, carved exotic woods, marbles and gilt — earned it classification as a national monument. Pestana's conversion keeps the palace itself for salons, restaurants and a handful of extraordinary suites, with most guest rooms in discreet wings folded into the gardens.

Those gardens are half the point: mature botanical grounds with palms, camellias and follies, arranged around a pool terrace that feels genuinely removed from the city. The Alcântara location, between the river and the hill of Ajuda, is residential rather than central — a short drive from Belém's monuments in one direction and the Time Out Market and Baixa in the other.

Days here start with breakfast under painted ceilings in the former ballroom and can end with a quiet dinner of modern Portuguese cooking on the garden terrace. The palace rooms reward exploration in between.
