Paramaribo, Suriname — South America
Editorial research. Profiled through in-depth editorial research; Browntravels has not yet stayed at this property. How we review
Paramaribo's most refined address: the Torarica group's boutique flagship in riverside gardens near the UNESCO-listed old town.
Royal Torarica is the elegant senior member of the family-run Torarica group that has anchored Suriname's hospitality for decades. Set in tropical gardens along the Suriname River a short stroll from the wooden Dutch-colonial centre—a UNESCO World Heritage site—the Royal takes the group's flagship role: quieter and more polished than its resort sibling next door, with a marble-cool lobby, attentive staff and the country's most comfortable rooms.
Accommodation is bright and contemporary, in whites and warm timber with balconies over the gardens or river; the suites are the best in the country. The garden pool, framed by palms and royal terraces, is a serene alternative to the livelier scene at the adjacent Torarica Resort, whose casino, tennis and restaurants remain available to guests—the two properties function as a complementary campus.
Dining runs from riverside breakfasts to a kitchen that reflects Suriname's uniquely blended table—Javanese, Hindustani, Creole, Chinese and Dutch influences—alongside international standards. The waterfront promenade leads into the old town's palm-lined streets, and the hotel arranges the country's signature excursions: dolphin-watching on the river, Commewijne plantation loops by bicycle and boat, and flights to jungle lodges deep in the interior. For Paramaribo done comfortably, this is the address.
Around 36 rooms and suites in white and warm timber with garden or river balconies—the country's finest.
Riverside terraces serving Surinamese-blend and international cooking, extended by the campus's restaurants next door.
A palm-framed garden pool, gym access and massage treatments in a calm riverside setting.
The Browntravels Verdict
Paramaribo at its most graceful—the Royal is the considered base for old town and interior alike.
