Sofitel Legend Old Cataract

The Old Cataract has occupied its pink-granite bluff above the Nile since 1899, and its terrace view—feluccas drifting past Elephantine Island, the desert burning gold on the far bank—remains one of travel's imperishable images. Agatha Christie is indelibly associated with the hotel through Death on the Nile, and the guest ledger runs from Tsar Nicholas II to Winston Churchill and Princess Diana.

A meticulous restoration by Sofitel's Legend collection preserved the Moorish arches, crimson interiors and old-world ceremony of the Palace wing while adding a contemporary Nile wing alongside. Rooms in the historic building trade in atmosphere—high ceilings, antique furnishings, Nile-facing balconies—and the suites named for famous guests are period pieces in themselves.

Afternoon tea on the terrace at sunset is the ritual around which every stay is built, followed by dinner in the domed splendour of the 1902 restaurant. Aswan itself is southern Egypt at its most relaxed: Philae's temples, Nubian villages and felucca sails all within easy reach. Few hotels anywhere fuse literature, history and landscape so completely.
