Solomon Kitano Mendana Hotel

Named for Álvaro de Mendaña, the Spanish navigator who gave the Solomons their name, the Mendana has anchored Honiara's Mendana Avenue oceanfront for decades and remains the country's largest hotel. Under long-standing Japanese ownership it runs with a quiet orderliness—one reason it has stayed the steady choice for tour groups, dive parties and official visitors through every chapter of the capital's ups and downs.

The position is prime: gardens and the pool terrace face straight onto Iron Bottom Sound, sunsets land on the ocean-view rooms, and the central market and main street are a few minutes' walk. Rooms across the garden and ocean wings are simple, clean and air-conditioned, with the sea-facing categories worth the modest premium.

Dining is a particular point of pride, with a proper Japanese restaurant—sashimi from Honiara's tuna fleet is a highlight—alongside international menus and a waterfront bar.
