Southern Ocean Lodge

Southern Ocean Lodge was Australia's defining luxury lodge before the 2020 bushfires took it, and its rebuilding—completed with the same architect and deeper environmental resilience—stands among hospitality's most moving second acts. The sinuous single-storey building again rides its limestone clifftop on Kangaroo Island's south coast, the Great Room's curved glass wall dissolving into a horizon of heaving Southern Ocean.

Suites run along the cliff in a gentle arc so that every bed, bath and sunken lounge faces the sea; interiors work limestone, spotted gum and wool into a refined Australian vernacular.
