Tanoa International Dateline Hotel

The International Dateline was for decades Tonga's hotel of state—the waterfront address where royal celebrations and visiting dignitaries were housed—and after falling on hard times it was comprehensively rebuilt by Fiji's Tanoa group, reopening in 2017 as the kingdom's most capable hotel. The position on Vuna Road remains the best in the capital: across from the seawall promenade, a short stroll from the Royal Palace, and facing sunsets that turn the harbour bronze.

Rooms are modern, cool and straightforward, the ocean-view categories comfortably the ones to book, and the large pool in the garden courtyard is the meeting point of expatriate and travelling Nuku'alofa. Conference rooms keep the hotel busy with regional summits and government business—it is, functionally, Tonga's convention centre.

The restaurant and bar serve dependable international and Tongan dishes with Friday-night buzz, and the front desk arranges the essentials: whale-swim operators in season, day boats to Pangaimotu and Fafá, and taxis to the blowholes and archaeological sites of Tongatapu. It is not a resort, but as the solid, central anchor of a Tonga itinerary, the Dateline has quietly resumed its old role.
