Editorial research. Profiled through in-depth editorial research; Browntravels has not yet stayed at this property. How we review
Mayfair's most quietly assured grand hotel, where Edwardian manners meet a world-class bar and some of London's finest cooking.
The Connaught occupies a red-brick corner of Carlos Place with the confidence of a house that has never needed to advertise. Rebuilt in 1897 and polished continuously since, it remains the Mayfair address for guests who prefer discretion to display. The famous mahogany staircase still spirals up through the heart of the building, and Tadao Ando's water feature on the pavement outside signals the hotel's knack for folding contemporary art into Edwardian bones without fuss.
Rooms and suites, many reworked by designers including Guy Oliver, keep a residential English register—soft tailoring, antiques, marble bathrooms—while the newer Aman Spa below ground brings a level of calm rare in this postcode. Service is the real signature: butlers who appear precisely when wanted, doormen who remember names across decades, and a general unflappability that regulars regard as the hotel's true luxury.
Eating and drinking is where The Connaught turns showstopper. Hélène Darroze's flagship restaurant has made the hotel a fixture of London's fine-dining conversation, while the Connaught Bar, with its Cubist-inflected David Collins interiors and celebrated martini trolley, draws a nightly crowd of its own. Add Jean-Georges at the front for lighter days and one of the city's best patisserie counters, and the hotel functions as a self-contained Mayfair itinerary.
Around 120 rooms and suites in a soft residential English style, with marble bathrooms and butler service; top suites overlook Carlos Place and Mount Street.
Hélène Darroze's celebrated restaurant, Jean-Georges at The Connaught for all-day dining, and the Connaught Bar with its legendary martini ritual.
An Aman Spa with a small pool and deeply restorative treatments—an unexpected pocket of stillness beneath Mayfair.
The Browntravels Verdict
The connoisseur's London grand hotel—quieter than its rivals, and all the better for it.
