Hamburg, Germany — Europe
Editorial research. Profiled through in-depth editorial research; Browntravels has not yet stayed at this property. How we review
A sculptural 2018 lakeside build on the Outer Alster with curving white architecture, a rooftop pool and two-Michelin-star dining.
The Fontenay is that rarity in Europe: a ground-up, no-compromise luxury hotel built this century. Opened in 2018 on the wooded shore of Hamburg's Outer Alster lake, its gleaming white form—three interlocking circles with no straight corridors—was conceived by architect Jan Störmer as 'sculptural architecture' answering the water and parkland around it. The result reads more like a modernist lakeside villa scaled up than a conventional city hotel.
Interiors continue the curves with a light, maritime-modern palette, a soaring atrium garden at the building's heart, and rooms whose full-height glazing pulls the lake and the sails on it into the foreground. The hotel sits in the leafy Rotherbaum quarter, a pleasant stroll or short drive from the Jungfernstieg, and the Alster running paths begin at the door.
On the sixth and seventh floors, the spa and its 20-metre-class indoor-outdoor rooftop pool deliver a panorama over lake and skyline that no other Hamburg hotel can match, while Lakeside, the glass-wrapped fine-dining restaurant above it, has earned two Michelin stars for precise contemporary cuisine. With the Parkview brasserie and an elegant bar below, The Fontenay makes a complete argument for itself as northern Germany's most accomplished modern hotel.
Around 130 rooms and suites with curved walls, warm modern interiors and full-height glazing onto the lake or gardens.
Lakeside holds two Michelin stars on the rooftop; Parkview handles all-day brasserie dining beneath the atrium garden.
A sixth-floor spa with indoor-outdoor rooftop pool, saunas, gym and lake-view relaxation decks.
The Browntravels Verdict
Germany's finest contemporary city hotel—architecture, rooftop swimming and starred dining on the Alster's edge.
