The Peninsula Beijing

The Peninsula was among the first international luxury hotels in the Chinese capital, and rather than trade on seniority it chose radical renewal: a top-to-bottom transformation completed in 2017 converted the entire hotel into suites, roughly halving the room count and making it the city's most residential five-star address. The location has always been the trump card—just off Wangfujing's shopping street, within walking distance of the Forbidden City's east gate.

The suites are the story: separate sleeping and living areas as standard, dressing rooms, marble bathrooms and bedside technology in the Peninsula manner, wrapped in interiors that reference Chinese screens and lacquerwork without descending into theme. Arrival through a courtyard flanked by traditional lions into a lobby hung with contemporary Chinese art sets the tone of a private mansion more than a convention-scale hotel.

Huang Ting serves Cantonese and Beijing classics—including a respected take on Peking duck—in a setting built from reclaimed courtyard-house materials, while Jing evokes a lighter contemporary mood upstairs. The basement spa and pool are extensive, and the concierge team navigates hutong dining and Great Wall logistics with practised ease. For Forbidden City sightseeing in genuine comfort, nothing in Beijing is better placed at this level.
