Unlike many luxury flagships shoehorned into mixed-use towers, The Peninsula Tokyo stands alone: a freestanding 24-storey building on the edge of Marunouchi, designed to evoke a glowing Japanese lantern and facing directly onto Hibiya Park and the outer gardens of the Imperial Palace. The position is remarkable—Ginza's department stores begin a block away in one direction, the palace moat in the other—and the hotel wears its address with quiet confidence rather than flash.

Rooms are among the largest in the city and lean into Japanese materials and gadgetry in equal measure: lacquer surfaces, dressing rooms, deep tubs with valet boxes and bedside panels that control everything. The service culture blends Hong Kong-honed Peninsula precision with Tokyo's own exacting standards, and the house fleet of green Rolls-Royces remains a brand signature that still turns heads outside the porte cochère.

Dining is led by Peter, the glass-walled grill and bar on the 24th floor with views across the palace grounds towards the skyline, alongside Cantonese cooking at Hei Fung Terrace and a patisserie whose queues speak for themselves. The basement spa and pool are serious, and the concierge desk is one of the most capable in Japan. As a first base for Tokyo, it is very hard to better.
