Valletta, Malta — Europe
Editorial research. Profiled through in-depth editorial research; Browntravels has not yet stayed at this property. How we review
Malta's 1947 grande dame at Valletta's city gate, with seven acres of gardens running down the bastions to a harbour-view infinity pool.
The Phoenicia has been Malta's flagship hotel since 1947, its dignified limestone crescent standing immediately outside Valletta's city gate where the capital's baroque grid meets the open Floriana bastions. Conceived in the late 1930s and long associated with British colonial-era glamour—it has hosted royalty and remains a fixture of Maltese public life—the hotel wears its history in polished terrazzo floors, high-ceilinged salons and a palm-lined entrance drive.
Its trump card is space, the rarest commodity in fortress Valletta: seven acres of mature gardens tumble down the fortifications towards Marsamxett Harbour, ending at a bastion-edge infinity pool with views across the water to Manoel Island. Rooms are classically comfortable rather than cutting-edge, the best facing the harbour or the gardens, and a considered renovation in recent years refreshed the house without erasing its character.
The Phoenicia Deck and club-like bars handle Mediterranean menus and a well-loved afternoon tea, while Valletta's cathedrals, palaces and restaurant scene begin two minutes' walk away through the gate. Rates remain gentle beside comparable heritage flagships elsewhere in Europe, making the Phoenicia one of the Mediterranean's better-value grande dames.
Around 136 rooms and suites in classic style, the finest overlooking Marsamxett Harbour or the gardens.
Mediterranean dining on the Phoenicia Deck, an elegant lobby bar and a long-standing afternoon-tea tradition.
A garden-level spa with treatment rooms and sauna, plus the celebrated bastion-edge infinity pool.
The Browntravels Verdict
The definitive Maltese grande dame—garden space, harbour views and history at the capital's front door.
