Oslo, Norway — Europe
Editorial research. Profiled through in-depth editorial research; Browntravels has not yet stayed at this property. How we review
Oslo's art-filled waterfront hotel on Tjuvholmen, beside the Renzo Piano-designed Astrup Fearnley Museum and the fjord's swimming decks.
The Thief takes its name from Tjuvholmen—'thief islet'—the once-disreputable harbour spit that Oslo transformed into its gallery-lined waterfront quarter. The hotel stands at the district's tip beside the Astrup Fearnley Museum of contemporary art, whose Renzo Piano-designed glass sails curve along the fjord a few metres away, and the association is more than geographic: original works by artists including Andy Warhol and Julian Opie hang through the hotel's public spaces and rooms.
Interiors are dark, plush and cinematic—bronze tones, statement lighting, deep textiles—an intentional counterpoint to Nordic paleness. Most rooms have balconies, and the fjord-facing ones deliver water views with the murmur of harbour life below. In summer, guests swim from the neighbourhood's decks and the city's floating saunas moor nearby; the hotel's own rooftop opens seasonally for drinks above the water.
The spa, with its pool and sauna suite, is a genuine urban retreat by Oslo standards, and the ground-floor grill leans into Norwegian seafood. The Aker Brygge boardwalk connects the hotel to the city hall, the new National Museum and ferry piers within a short stroll. For contemporary-art travellers and fjord-view seekers, The Thief remains Oslo's most characterful luxury address.
Around 118 rooms and suites in rich, dark-toned design, most with balconies and many facing the fjord.
A Norwegian grill focused on seafood and open-fire cooking, a lobby bar with serious cocktails, and a seasonal rooftop.
The Thief Spa offers a pool, sauna suite and treatment rooms—among Oslo's best hotel wellness floors.
The Browntravels Verdict
Oslo's art hotel on the water—choose it for balconies, Warhols and the gallery quarter at your door.
