Tiger Mountain Pokhara Lodge

Tiger Mountain Pokhara Lodge occupies one of the great view-sites of the Himalaya: a ridgetop a thousand feet above the Pokhara valley, from which the Annapurna range—Dhaulagiri, Annapurna South, the fishtail spire of Machhapuchhare, Lamjung Himal—fills the northern sky from dawn to dusk. Built in the late 1990s from local stone and slate by craftsmen using traditional techniques, and long associated with the family behind Tiger Tops, the lodge pioneered low-impact, community-rooted tourism in Nepal and still sets the standard for it.

Rooms are spread through stone bungalows along the ridge, each simple and deeply comfortable—local textiles, wide beds, verandahs angled precisely at the mountains—with no televisions to compete with the view. Days are built around walking: guided hikes through Gurung villages and terraced farmland, birdwatching, and gentle descents to the valley, with staff drawn largely from surrounding communities whose knowledge animates every trail.

Evenings return to the main lodge for drinks by the fire, Nepali and international home cooking at shared or private tables, and sunset from the pool terrace, where the water appears to tip over the ridge towards the peaks. Pokhara's lakeside cafés are forty-five minutes below, but the lodge's argument is stillness. For Annapurna views without a trekking permit, nothing in Nepal is better placed.
