Truk Stop Hotel

The Truk Stop is the town alternative to Chuuk's palm-grove resort: a compact waterfront hotel in the middle of Weno, five minutes from the airstrip, with its own dock, dive shop and restaurant lined up along the lagoon edge. For divers who want quick boat runs to the wrecks and the convenience of town—such as it is—within walking distance, the equation works well.

Rooms are plain, clean and air-conditioned, the lagoon-view categories worth requesting for the sunset over the anchorage. The on-site Truk Stop Dive Center is well run and flexible with small groups, and surface intervals pass easily on the deck of the Hard Wreck Café, the hotel's restaurant-bar, which serves generous plates of fish, burgers and rice dishes to a mix of divers, aid workers and local business people.

Expectations should be calibrated to Chuuk: power and water are managed by the hotel's own systems, streets outside are potholed and unlit, and entertainment is the lagoon itself. But the welcome is genuine, the logistics work, and for a wreck-diving pilgrimage on a budget—or a night near the airport before an early flight—the Truk Stop earns its loyal following.
