Bulgari was founded in Rome, and its via dei Condotti flagship has glittered at the foot of the Spanish Steps since the nineteenth century — yet the maison's hotel collection, launched in Milan, took two decades to reach the city of its birth. The homecoming finally arrived in June 2023, when Bulgari Hotel Roma opened in a restored 1930s rationalist building on Piazza Augusto Imperatore, directly facing the Mausoleum of Augustus and a short walk from the Ara Pacis. Rationalism, marble and the house style

The Milan-based studio Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel, architects of the entire Bulgari collection, met the building's severe 1930s geometry with the richest material palette in the group: acres of marble and travertine, bronze detailing, and commissioned craftsmanship that reads as a continuous argument between ancient Rome and Italian modernism. The rooftop terrace surveys the domes of the centro storico; the subterranean spa, with its mosaic-lined pool, draws openly on the city's imperial bath tradition. It is unmistakably a jeweller's hotel — precise, lustrous, obsessed with setting.

Dining follows the collection's established partnership with Niko Romito, the three-Michelin-starred chef whose Il Ristorante concept anchors Bulgari's hotels worldwide. In Rome his refined, deceptively simple Italian cooking lands with particular resonance — this is, after all, the cuisine's home crowd — and the bar has quickly joined the short list of places where well-dressed Romans actually drink, the truest measure of any hotel's arrival in this city.

Where it leaves Rome's grand hotels

Rome's luxury landscape has deepened dramatically, with international houses arriving in force across the past few years. Bulgari's entry is distinct in kind: not a foreign brand courting the city but a Roman name returning with a flagship.
