Diani Beach, Kenya — Africa
Editorial research. Profiled through in-depth editorial research; Browntravels has not yet stayed at this property. How we review
Three staffed private villas on a low cliff above Diani Beach, long regarded as the most exclusive way to end a Kenyan safari on the Indian Ocean.
Alfajiri is less a hotel than a trio of great houses that happen to take guests. Set in tropical gardens on a coral rise above Diani's white sand, the Cliff, Garden and Beach villas were shaped by their Italian owners over decades into a singular composition of makuti thatch, carved doors, Indonesian antiques and deep, cushion-strewn verandas facing the reef-striped Indian Ocean. Each villa is taken exclusively, with its own staff, private chef and, for families, dedicated nannies—an arrangement that has made the property a quiet legend among safari planners.
Days organise themselves around the cliff-edge infinity pool, the tide's retreat across the lagoon and meals that fuse Italian instincts with the coast's seafood and Swahili spicing, served wherever the mood suggests. Golf at the neighbouring course, reef snorkelling, dhow trips and kite-surfing down the beach fill the active hours; colobus monkeys patrolling the gardens supply the entertainment between.
The barefoot-house-party register will not suit travellers wanting resort infrastructure—there is no spa menu or roster of restaurants—but that is precisely the point. As the exhale after the Masai Mara's dawn starts, with children absorbed and privacy absolute, Alfajiri remains the Kenyan coast's most coveted address.
Three exclusive-use villas—Cliff, Garden and Beach—sleeping families or groups, in makuti thatch with antiques, deep verandas and ocean-facing pools.
Private chefs cooking Italian-Swahili menus in each villa, served on verandas, by the pool or barefoot on the beach.
In-villa massages, the cliff-edge pool, reef snorkelling at low tide and golf next door rather than a formal spa.
The Browntravels Verdict
Kenya's ultimate private beach house—book a whole villa, bring the family and surrender the schedule.
