The Chedi Muscat

The Chedi Muscat proved, two decades ago, that Gulf luxury could whisper rather than shout, and its influence is still visible across the region. Jean-Michel Gathy's design distils Omani architecture—arches, domes, wind-tower geometry—into a monochrome composition of white pavilions and black reflecting pools, set in twenty-one acres of manicured gardens running down to the Gulf of Oman.

Rooms and suites continue the restraint: sand-toned interiors, dark timber, clean lines and not an ounce of gilt. The famous 103-metre pool stretches toward the beach like a strip of polished obsidian, one of three swimming options that include an adults-only garden pool. Service is composed and unhurried, matching a property that encourages guests to slow to its meditative pace.

Evenings belong to the lantern-lit restaurant, where open kitchens circle a room serving Arabian, Asian and Mediterranean menus of consistent quality, and to shisha and stargazing on the beach terrace. The spa's Balinese-influenced treatments complete the calm. Downtown Muscat, the opera house and the Mutrah souq are all a short drive away, making this both a resort and a genuinely useful city base.
