Alila Jabal Akhdar

Two thousand metres above the Gulf's heat, on the rim of a canyon that drops away like a wound in the earth, Alila Jabal Akhdar proves Arabia's most dramatic luxury is found in its mountains. The resort is built from local stone in the manner of the surrounding villages, its low buildings almost dissolving into the escarpment; from the cliff-edge infinity pool, the view runs unbroken across the gorge.

Rooms and villas continue the mineral palette—rough stone, dark timber, copper—warmed by fireplaces for genuinely cold winter nights, a novelty in this region. The air is thin, clean and roughly fifteen degrees cooler than Muscat, which is why the mountain's terraced rose gardens and pomegranate orchards have thrived here for centuries. Stargazing, guided via the resort's telescope evenings, is exceptional.

Days fill with via ferrata routes on the canyon wall, village and orchard hikes and archery, while the spa draws on mountain botanicals and juniper. Dining focuses on Omani and Levantine flavours with produce from the terraces. Combined with Muscat or the desert, Jabal Akhdar adds an altitude chapter no other Gulf itinerary can match.
